Frequently Asked Questions

What is scenic construction?

Scenic construction is the process of building scenery, sets, props, and environments for theatre productions, live events, immersive experiences, exhibitions, and creative installations. At S.A.S Works, our scenic construction team works closely with designers, production managers, and creative teams to transform concepts and technical drawings into practical, buildable realities.

How much does theatre set building cost?

Every project is different, so costs vary depending on the size, complexity, materials, finishes, installation requirements, and timescales involved. Whether you're looking for a simple scenic element or a large-scale theatre set build, we're happy to discuss your project and provide a tailored quotation.

At what stage should I contact S.A.S Works?

As early as possible. We can provide input during the design and planning stages, helping identify practical solutions, materials, build methods, budgets, and installation requirements before construction begins. However, we're equally happy to support projects that are already designed and ready for build.

Do you work outside Kent?

Yes. While S.A.S Works is based in Kent, we regularly work across London and throughout the UK. Our team provides scenic construction, scenic art, installations, live event support, and theatre set building services nation and worldwide.

Can you work from technical drawings and design packs?

Yes. We regularly work from technical drawings, design packs, visualisations, and production information provided by designers, production managers, and creative teams. We can also assist with technical development where required.

Can S.A.S Works install scenery on site?

Absolutely. In addition to workshop fabrication and scenic construction, we regularly provide on-site installation, fit-up, get-out, and production support services. We work with venues, theatres, production managers, and event teams to ensure scenery is installed safely and efficiently.

Do you build scenery for live events and immersive experiences?

Yes. Alongside theatre productions, we work on live events, immersive experiences, exhibitions, brand activations, and creative installations. Our team can support projects from initial concept through to fabrication, scenic finishing, and installation.

Do you offer both workshop builds and on-site installation?

Yes. We provide complete project support, from workshop fabrication and scenic construction through to delivery, fit-up, installation, maintenance, and get-out services

Do you offer scenic art services?

Yes. Our scenic artists create a wide range of scenic finishes including woodgraining, ageing, texturing, paint effects, floor treatments, prop finishing, and decorative scenic artwork. We can provide scenic art as part of a larger build or as a standalone service.

Can S.A.S Works help with tight deadlines?

We understand that productions and events often work to challenging schedules. While availability depends on our workload, we will always do our best to find practical solutions and support projects wherever possible.

Do you work on touring productions?

Yes. We regularly support touring productions and can advise on practical build solutions, durability, transport considerations, installation requirements, and efficient fit-ups.

Can architecture, art, and design students do work experience?

Yes. We regularly welcome students from a range of creative backgrounds including architecture, art and design, theatre production, performing arts, engineering, and product design. Placements are arranged around our project schedule and availability.

Do you offer work experience placements?

Yes. S.A.S Works regularly offers work experience placements for school, college, and university students, as well as emerging creatives looking to gain hands-on industry experience. Placements are arranged around our project schedule and can range from a single day to several weeks depending on availability and the nature of the work taking place in the workshop.

Can I visit the workshop before my placement?

Absolutely. We understand that starting somewhere new can feel a little daunting, especially for younger students or those who are neurodivergent. Where possible, we're happy to arrange a short visit before a placement begins so you can meet the team, see the workshop, and get a feel for the environment. Please get in touch and we'll do our best to accommodate this.

What should I wear for work experience?

Work experience is hands-on, so we recommend wearing comfortable clothes that you don't mind getting dusty, painty, or covered in sawdust. Steel toe cap boots are required in the workshop, and we suggest bringing layers as temperatures can vary depending on the weather and the work being carried out. Full health and safety information will be provided before your placement begins.

How do I join the S.A.S Works freelance network?

We operate a freelance network covering scenic carpenters, scenic artists, prop makers, fabricators, technicians, installation crew, and live event professionals. If you'd like to join, simply get in touch with some information about your experience, skills, and availability. Portfolios and CVs are welcome but not essential.

Do you work with production managers and designers?

Yes. Much of our work comes through production managers, theatre designers, technical managers, producers, and creative teams. We enjoy collaborating early in the process to help develop practical, cost-effective solutions that bring creative ideas to life.

What types of projects does S.A.S Works work on?

We work across theatre productions, touring shows, live events, immersive experiences, exhibitions, installations, scenic art projects, prop making, and bespoke fabrication. Our projects range from small scenic elements to large-scale set builds and complex installations.
